This week, we are chatting about Jean Dawson 🤘

Jean Dawson is a genre-defying artist whose story feels like it was shaped by crossing borders, both literally and musically. Born David Sanders in San Diego, he spent much of his childhood commuting from Tijuana, Mexico, to San Diego for school, waking up before dawn and spending hours on a bus listening to whatever music he could find. Growing up with a mixed African-American and Mexican heritage, music was woven into his life early on, as his parents exposed him to everything from West Coast hip-hop to rock en español. Those long bus rides, cultural pulls, and outsider perspective helped forge an artist who would later refuse to be boxed into any one genre or scene.

To give you some more of an idea about how this music will sound → they toured with Brockhampton. Over time, he’s become known for blending emotion, experiment, and narrative, touring internationally with acts like Brockhampton and collaborating with big names across genres.

Dawson’s sound is genre-fluid in the truest sense. He doesn’t just mix styles, he laminates them like the fine layers of a perfectly baked croissant. One moment you’ll hear anthemic, synth-driven pop, the next a fractured hip-hop beat, then a burst of grunge or alt-rock energy. His music often arrives with dramatic shifts, rich textures, and unexpected turns, like a collage where each piece still feels emotionally connected. There’s a playful instinct in his arrangements, but also a thoughtful layering that invites repeated listens.

Rather than sticking to a defined sound, Dawson gravitates toward what feels right: sweeping cinematic moments, rap-inflected rhythms, echoing guitars, and soulful vocal melodies that can suddenly give way to glitchy electronics or punk energy. Prince, Stevie Wonder, Mk.gee, Dijon, and The Midnight. Wild line up of artists? Yeah, well Jean delivers these influences on this record.

Glimmer of God, our rec today, is Dawson’s most ambitious and expansive project yet, blending pop, R&B, indie rock, funk, and experimental electronica into a textured whole. Some tracks glide with lush orchestration and soulful vocal lines, while others sprawl into rawer, electronic-charged territory, balancing energy and introspection. Across the album, there’s a feeling of cinematic scale. Dramatic string arrangements, shimmering synth layers, and bold groove sections that feel both nostalgic and forward-looking.
