Pop Rocks But Not "That" Kind
Pop and rock get mixed and swirled
Michael Bolton Vox Kinda
Okay this week is super exciting. I’ve not had a band that has captivated my listening quite like this group in a little bit. This week we are going to be talking about a pop rock band that just released their full debut album and DAMN it is good. It has me quite excited for more tunes from them, let’s get in at the ground floor my friends!
Who are they? Name & date of birth, please
Let’s talk about FLOYA. Are you a fan of Hands Like Houses? Fan of The Band Camino? How about LOYALS? Okay, okay… you get it. This band, FLOYA, is all about groove, melodies that you can immediately hum to, and addictive progressions that keep you coming back to jam. I mention those other groups here because the sounds they have that can be felt and heard in FLOYA’S tunes. (If you have NOT listened to the above bands.. do yourself a favor. If you want recs on where to start, hmu.)
FLOYA is comprised of Marv Wilder and Phil Bayer who both are from Germany. They both started in their own lanes - Marv in EDM/electronic (and others), Phil in rock and other areas. You can actually hear some of their childhood influences in their music here (Peter Gabriel, U2, Sting). They shot into popularity pretty quickly with one of their singles being featured in Australia at an AFL game. Featured in Kerrang! UK, etc.
What Sort Of Sounds Will I Be Hearing?
FLOYA is so appealing to me as a sound because while it has callbacks to other groups I know and love, this still feels very new to me (which is probably spot on with their intentions). I hear vocals that remind me of Michael Bolton but also of Trent from Hands Like Houses. Like I said above, you’ll also hear groups like The Band Camino and LOYALS in their tunes. The Band Camino has a very distinct guitar tuning that this makes me think of, LOYALS have very rocky grooves in their pop tunes that FLOYA echos in their release. (LOYALS album rec → listen to their self titled, yw)
Expect synth, a tight snare drum, clean guitar tones with a bit of delay, symphonic undertones with violin/orchestral arrangements.
Rec Time - Let’s Get Into It
With only one record currently out, let’s chat about it, rate it. I think you’ll like this if you enjoy pop musical elements with a rock backbone.
FLOYA - Yume. The start of this album sets the scene with synth and the clean guitar tone you can expect for the rest of the record. From this poppy start, to more rock grooves in the next tune, this album is just solid at making ya dance and jump and jive. I honestly think its impossible to not vibe AT LEAST a little bit when jamming this record. I am excited for more, FLOYA!
album rating - 9.0/10, fave track - Wonders
