Welcome back to Finetuned! This is someone who is ½ of one of my fave bands. This week we are taking things to a bit more chill direction, which is totally fine by me - I hope the same is true for you. I recommend creating a relaxed environment and just take it slow, let it ride, keep it smooth.

This week, we are chatting about Charlie Martin 🤘

Giphy

Charlie Martin came up through the Austin, Texas indie circuit, building his sound the way a lot of great modern artists do - quietly, consistently, and on his own terms. His early work feels like it grew out of home recording setups and close creative circles, where the focus wasn’t necessarily on perfection but on getting the feeling right, which I think is one of the most beautiful thoughts to have about music. That environment just had to be low pressure, which gave him space to develop not just as a songwriter, but as a multi-instrumentalist with a strong sense of arrangement and pacing. He makes tunes that just sort of feel right.

What makes Charlie stand out isn’t just that he can write a good song - it’s how deliberately he builds one. Having seen Charlie perform live, it’s just so clear he FEELS music (he’s ½ of the band Hovvdy, which as some of the OG Finetuned readers will know… is an absolute fave of mine). There’s a clear attention to structure, tone, and restraint that runs through his work. Even as his reach has grown, that foundation hasn’t really changed. The music still feels like it’s coming from a real place: familiar rooms, trusted instincts, and a process that prioritizes cohesion over flash. It’s less about chasing a moment and more about refining a craft over time.

Charlie Martin’s sound sits in the indie pop/rock lane, but it’s defined more by execution than genre. He leans into clean and lightly textured guitars, steady rhythms, and arrangements that feel carefully measured. You won’t hear a ton of excess or over the top sounds that are meant for flashy production. It’s straight forward in a beautiful, expected way, and that’s where his musicianship really shows.

There’s a strong understanding of when to pull things back and when to let a melody carry the weight. On Imaginary People (our rec today), everything tightens up in a really intentional way. The record leans into clean guitar tones, warm low-end, and steady, mid-tempo grooves, but what stands out is how cohesive it feels from track to track. The arrangements are just SO dialed in. There is this distinct haze that you would know well if you’ve jammed bands like Slow Pulp, Hovvdy, Alice Phoebe Lou, and a few others.

Lyrically, Imaginary People focuses on relationships, perception, and the ways people misunderstand each other. There’s a recurring thread of trying to reconcile who someone is versus who you thought they were, and how those gaps form over time. It’s reflective, but not overly abstract - more observational than poetic-for-the-sake-of-it.

That directness pairs well with the music. The lyrics don’t compete with the arrangements- they sit comfortably inside them. It’s another example of restraint working in his favor: clear ideas, delivered simply, with just enough detail to make them stick. I find the piano on this record to be so welcoming and truly beautifully layered.

Why Listen? Imaginary People is worth your time if you care about songwriting that’s quietly well-crafted. It’s not trying to overwhelm you.

More than anything, it’s a showcase of Charlie Martin as a musician. The playing, the arranging, the pacing - it all points to someone who understands how to build songs that last. If you’re into indie records that reward repeat listens not because they’re flashy, but because they’re thoughtfully made, this one lands.

This is the perfect record to just chill out to. It makes me really want to see Hovvdy live again, see Charlie live, and just live in the moment of beautifully human, rich, and intentional music.
