Someone's In The House

That would be DR. GABBA

This is a bit of a different one for us here Finetuners! As a pivot from the heavy lyrical content and music that is the opposite of bombastic, we are getting some uptempo mostly instrumental tunes that is synthesized as hell, by nature of course. This week we are talking about DR. GABBA! That’s right, it’s house music time, folks.

This is going to be all of us, yes all of you, after you jam some of these house tunes. ⬇️

House Music… Huh?!

House music! What the heck is it, right? House music is a genre of electronic dance music that was sort of founded/started in Chicago in the early 1980s. You can generally expect it to be quite repetitive, have a solid baseline, and be something that you can bop to (or like clean the house to or some shit). There are a few reasons why house music became more widely accepted and popular, let’s chat briefly about that.

One of the main reasons we see it as popular and accepted is because of the thing it does that most music does - community. It provided (provides) a sense of community for people! It has roots in LGBTQ+ and various other communities and it really provided a safe space for expression for so many people, specifically in New York and Chicago in its early days. House music is pretty neat in that it is simple yet complex all in the same and delivers such a vibe that empowers everyone nearby to just dance, bop, jive, and vibe.

Tell Me More, I’m Listening

Okay, okay - I gotchu. House music is captivating for so many people because of a few themes, beyond what was listed above. Familiar, accessible, creative, timeless, progressive. These are all things that can be felt and seen in a meaningful way with house music. Its repetitive nature means that it can be something people come back to and aren’t shocked by or surprised - this can be comfortable. Accessible in that it’s approachable. There “isn’t much to it” on the surface and it makes everyone welcome. Creative? Each producer/DJ can use whatever samples they please, pivots in tempo, etc. while still falling into the beautiful parent genre that is house music. Progressive? Well… it has subgenres of course. That is a conversation for another day!

(If you want to check out other subgenres - let me know. We can dive into acid house, tech house, etc.)
