I've Waved Twice, Sorry Thrice

Third Wave Emo - Emo Part 3

It’s Third 👋 👋 👋 Emo My Doods

We have hit the last part of this series… but it will NOT be the last time you read something about emo from me! THIRD WAVE EMO IS HERE! There are a lot of legends in this mix and in this specific wave of emo, some of my all-time faves for sure.

Third wave emo is where we sort of see the merging of pop-punk and emo happen. This is where the lines between the two genres get blurred, with groups like Taking Back Sunday and MCR coming into the mix. In third wave emo, we get the melodic nature of midwest emo and some of the punchier drums from emocore combined into this new space with even more melodies, catchy hooks, and just overall clean production.

Overall, I do have a great love for this phase in particular how it influenced punk and emo tunes that followed… cause I’m a huge pop punk/punk music fan.

TIMES OF SOME RECS - HELL YEAH 🤘

There are three recs this week! These are probably albums you already know if you are an emo fan, but for those who are not (and are… like just listen again), you are in for a treat! Enjoy my friends, enjoy.

Brand New - Deja Entendu. This is a record that you can go back to a lot, as it really is a timeless gem that is sort of like a moniker for third wave emo subgenre. I remember when I first heard this album, I couldn’t stop listening to it as it has this pinchy lead guitar combined with bright cymbals and a loose snare that brings its own sort of sound to this mix.

album rating - 8.9/10, fave track - The Quiet Things That No One Ever Knows

Hawthorne Heights - If Only You Were Lonely. This is a phenomenal record! I find myself jamming this album if I want to sing to an emo album. This is chock full of great choruses, catchy as hell melodies, and an instrumental mix we know of punk/emo tunes. I highly recommend this album!

album rating - 9.5/10, fave track - Saying Sorry

My Chemical Romance - The Black Parade. This band has so many iconic tunes and lyrics that resonate with virtually every fan of emo music ever. I recommended their other iconic album at the start of this series, so I wanted to highlight The Black Parade here. PLEASE listen to this if you enjoy emo music!

album rating - 9.7/10, fave track - Welcome to the Black Parade

I depart you this week with three waves of see ya later! This is a wrap on the emo series here. With that, I hope you all have enjoyed this week’s Finetuned and this series overall. Please do share Finetuned with your friends & fam! I believe great music should be shared, cherished, and understood from all sorts of perspectives.

Little note here, most of the links to albums will be on Spotify, where I also have playlists that feature my recs based on the month their newsletter came out. You can find those here!

See you all next week! 🙌
