To Hell With Process
Math rock meets deathcore this week
Happy Wednesday Finetuners! Welcome back, welcome back. This week is definitely a super fun one - especially for all of you metal fans, and more specifically you prog metal doods. This week is all about Unprocessed, a math rock meets deathcore band. I saw them last year when they opened for Polyphia and that is when they largely popped into my stratosphere. Let’s get into it, lads!
Who Are These People?
Unprocessed. The group was formed in Germany and is comprised Manuel (guitar & vox), David (bass), Christoph (guitar), and Leon (drums)! They are known for their wacky finger-picking and tapping guitar (Manuel) that is at super speed with heavily syncopated drum grooves. Leon loves cymbal grabs and blast beats, and I love hearing it!
I think what truly makes them special is their dynamic musical ability - and I mean that in every stretch of the word. They are so dynamic in where they take us sonically, from pop grooves and synthesized drums to heavy blast beast, bass tones, and wicked sweeps on guitar - all in the SAME song. Manuel has a beautiful voice that he matches perfectly with the tonality they elect for in that moment of a given song and then can flip the switch on a moment’s notice, turning our once pop song into a deathcore tune with heavy chugs.
Give Me Some More - What Can I Expect?
Meshuggah meets math rock meets Periphery. They echo so many moments (and production) felt in old tunes in Meshuggah’s Obzen record. They kick us in the face with bass tones and licks that feel like Polyphia’s older stuff that was like being marinated in a Primus x Korn mixture. They will also have switch-ups quickly but musically well done, similar to that of Periphery’s releases. Seriously, get ready to groove!
Another term I’d use to describe their tunes - texture. There are so many clean tones, much fuzzy-wuzzy, as well as gut-wrenching heaviness that gets juxtaposed SO beautifully with synthesized drum tones, backing orchestral moments, arpeggios out the ass, and truly so much more. There are a lot of moments that feel cinematic and straight out of a movie in their tunage. While we are at it - check out this live video friends, like seriously this could be the best song of 2024.📺️ (click the image for the video)
Now That We’ve Processed Unprocessed ⤵️
Listen at this point just do yourself a favor and listen to their music man. It’s actually so addicting, easy to headbang to, and really a music fan’s music to jam to. They are really hectic and make a lot of sounds, so if you are looking for something to chill to, this may not be the right choice for that moment!
Finetuned Rec 👇️Top notch record that leaves me wanting (and excited) for more. I think you can find a lot of moments to adore in this record - and they are likely a different genre all in the same. A beautiful depiction of prog metal that simply keeps on giving 🤘 |
